Share your textbook reading and note taking methods. When you're assigned to read a portion of a textbook, what's your approach? When reading from a textbook, what, if anything do you look for/concentrate on? What works for you, and what doesn’t? Do you preview, just plow through it, or hunt and peck for "answers"? Even if you don't regularly read through assigned textbook readings, what benefits or weaknesses can you see with a systemized, organized textbook reading approach like sq3r? Do you think it's a good idea to take notes from what you learn in your textbooks? Explain.

The only time I read a text book is when there is book work along with it and even then I just look for the answers and don't read it. I think it is a good idea to take notes from what you read because it could benefit you for if you have a quiz and are able to use notes.

You and Your Textbooks - BFFs, frenemies, or enemies? I must say my textbooks and I are frenemies. I use them when I have to. If there's a test coming up, I'll look over the book sometimes and write down big vocab words, sometimes the main ideas and little side notes that I think will be on the test. If I'm assigned to reading a part of a book, sometimes I don't read and just wait for other people to talk about the pages. I rarely use my math textbook, I just use my notes that I've taken. But if I had a book for my history class, I'd probably use it.
-Gabbi Kuhnly
I don't read my textbooks. Even when readings are assigned. If I have a worksheet I just look for the answers without reading. I just normally look for key words in the questions and find them in the readings. If I did read through a chapter I think it would be beneficial. I'd get more information than just the few answers from the worksheet.
-Tory Schicker
My approach to reading the part in the text book, I do not read it at all. I do not concentrate on anything while I am reading the book. The only way that I look at the chapter, is when we have worksheet or questions that need to be answered. The benefits that would come of reading the book is that you know what is going on during calls and you are no lost.
When i'm assigned a reading from a textbook I usually just hunt and peck fo the answeres on the given assignment. When i'm reading something to learn and study it though I go through it alittle slower and take my time. I try to pay a little bit more attention to bolded or emphazied words, sometimes stopping to take notes of vocabulary or important ideas. I see the importance of the sq3r system because it's a good way to make sure you've retained all the information you've read. Although I don't usually take the time to be that thorough I do try to take some notes on important information.
For the most part when I get an assignment to read out of my book, I don’t read it. I mean if it’s a topic that I like I will read it, but if it’s something that I don’t like, I won’t read it. If I have to do homework from it I will just pick out the answers. I think that it’s a good idea to take notes from your book so then you have everything in your notebook and you know where it is, instead of trying to find it in the book.

When I am assigned to read a portion of a textbook, first i read the title of each paragraph. Then skim over the paragraph. When skimming over the paragraph I concentrate on finding key points things that may sound important. It works for me and what doesnt work is reading the whole thing word for word. When given an assignment and to read the textbook I look at the sheet then hunt and peck for answers on the sheet. I do this because we get graded on the sheet and not on the reading part of it, so i finish the sheet by any means necessary. The SQ3R method takes to much time and if you spend all that time just to get an assigment done it will take 2x longer to get the sheet done than if you just normally read the textbook. Taking notes on what you read is a good idea because it will help retain information. -Collin Rortvedt
When i have to read from a text book i usually just read. I really dont concentrate on anything unless i have to answer questions. If i like the subject then i will take the time to understand what im reading however if it doesnt intrest me then i just hunt and peck through it. SQ3R seems like it would take a while to completely finish and some people jus dont want to work through that. Sometimes it might be a good idea to take notes cause sometimes notes can be in the book and not mentioned in class. Cheyenne
I usually just write down facts that I think is important. When I read I usually look for the black headings and skim though it to write stuff down. I hate when I have to write my notes in a certain way because otherwise I get confused since its not the way I usually do it. Well usually when I take notes I forget some of the abbreviations and I never go back over them unless its a day before a test or quiz. When I feel like previewing then I just skim through them. I think it helps to take notes because I learned that if you dont, then you dont know whats going on. -Lauren
When I read a textbook I usually look over an assigned section first, and then read the whole thing before answering questions. When I take notes it is usually only on things that are important or that I know I will have to know or understand in the future. When I read a textbook I concentrate on bold words or statements because they ahve the most importance. Sometimes I preview my textbook and sometimes I just look for answers, it depends on how much time I have. T think that sq3r is a beneficial method because it leads you to learn what you are reading and not just hunt for answers and then forget. I think it is a good idea to take notes from textbook because there are key ideas and words and you usually need to know. Even if you know something you should still write it down to strengthen your knowledge.
-Josh Derus
i just open the book and read it or pick through what i need. i tend to look for key headlines or facts that help me get what i need down and maybe later if a test coming up i tend to go back and skim through to study a bit for it.
i sure go through and preview but then i have a hard time going through the rest of the book.i have tried the sq3r but i dident find it to work for me outlines are more helpful.
Becky
Well, it always depends on what class it is for and how much energy I have that day. Sometimes I jus read the part and then jot down a few notes to just know enough for a quiz or something. When I have time and energy though I will read the whole chapter, summaries and review questions then take detailed notes.
I see some problems with organized forms because sometimes it takes way too much energy. But I see that it can make it a lot easier to understand and to take it all in. I do think it’s a good idea to take notes, because its easier to get to the info that you actually need.
I only read a textbook when i absolutly have to. I just look for the answers that i need to look up i usually dont really read it all. My weakness is when i dont read the chapter or section before what i need to read sometimes i get confused or have no idea what the book is talking about. I think everyone should learn how to take notes properly and actually take notes after reading from the book, if you takes notes then everything would be so much easier for assignments.
-Amanda
When I get assigned a reading from a text book, i don't read it. I haven't actually read from a text book in a very long time. I guess that I never got around to finding out why i need my textbook. With all of these advances in technology I'm suprised that schools even have textbooks anymore, students just use the internet know to get information that they need. If i did look for info in a textbook i would proboly just hunt and peck to find the answers. So i guess that i would call my textbooks my enemiesbecause i don't use them, and they are of no use to me.
-Taylor Gruenke
When I have an assignment that needs me to read out of a text book in order to get answers I usually read the chapter then go back and look at where I remember seeing the answer and write that down. Before I read the chapter I read what answers I need in the assignment because then when I read the chapter I know what i'm looking for. I don't think it is very nessecary to take notes as you read because you'll most likely get your assignment back so you can use that to study from. This may hurt you if you don't get the assignment back. So over all i don't think it's a big deal if you Idon't take notes. Evan
I tend to skim through the book. At least I get the just of the reading by skimming. If I do have an assignment to go along with the reading I will actually read the book. I have learned that by reading you will retain information that will benefit you later. Usually when I read I write down bolded words or headings and subheadings that are linked. Under the headings I will write important ideas and concepts. I understand that this takes time and energy, but if I don't actually read I will be absolutely lost later on.
Brianna
I occasionally use text books. If there is book work i just search for the answers. If I have to take notes from the text i just define the bolded words. I think it would be a good idea to take notes from the book, but it takes alot of time.
- Brittany Daigle.
To be honest, I actually do read my textbooks, however I don't take notes from them. I read my textbooks because the way they're written is top-notch. There's also alot of information in them that is usefull for you class. I think the SQ3R approach is a good way to learn from a textbook, but time consuming. It would make a ten minute reading assignment into a 30 minute reading assignment. And If you don't like Physics for the first ten minutes, what would make you like it for thirty?
-Cameron Gruenke
I never use my textbooks. When I get one for a class I write my name in it and it sits in my locker the rest of the year. When I am assigned homework and the answers are found in the book, then I just hunt for the answers, I dont read it. Even though I dont ever use my textbook, I think it is a good idea to take notes on what you read when you do go through the book.
-kayle rusch
i normaly just plow through it and read the whole thing cuz its easier to understand. a good thing about that is that i never miss any information. also i dont forget too much. a bad thing is that it takes me longer to do the assignment. as long as i retain the information i dont think it matters. i just think it works better for me.
-Joshua Cortinaz
I would have to say that my textbooks are enemies to me. I use them only if I have a worksheet to go with my book but even then I do not read it, I skim through to find the answers. I understand that if I did read the text book I would probably understand what is going on more in that class but once i pick up the book and start reading it puts me to sleep. Note taking would be good just so that you don't have to keep pulling out a big text book and reading it over and over again. This way you are getting the main information you need from the book and the stuff you will need to know to do tests or worksheets.
~Brittany Kassens
I only read the text book when I have to. Even then I sometimes don't do it. If there is a worksheet with it, I just skim the pages for the answers. When we are told to just read a certain amount of pages, I also just sort of skim it. It is extremely boring to me and hate reading text books for school.
-Shanna
I use my textbook in most of my classes because it is required to do most of the homework. I usually don't read out of the textbook because we are never assigned to. If i ever have to I hunt and peck for the answers/important topics. I don't really have notetaking methods. I put the main ideas in darker writing and I indent the subtopics. I believe that it is a good idea to take notes from what you learned in your textbook, because they are reliable and credible. I think that the sq3r system takes longer that regular notetaking. So that is the main reason why I don't do it.
Trevor Thiel
I don't read in my text books very often at all. But when i do i try to read at a pace where i'm understanding what i'm reading and not just trying to get it done. I mostly concentrate on the bolded words and the main topics. Some benefits i receive is i take a few definitions maybe.
honestly i don't read textbooks at all unless i'm doing an assignment and i have to look for the answers in the book. Even then i kind of just skim through the paragraphs to find my answers. sq3r seems pretty organized and might work well for some people. It may not work for some people. I know i won't be using that often.
-Kim
I rarely go through my text book when i get the text book i just sign my name and put it in my locker. My study strategies are listen in class for an assignment. When i read my text book i just skim through it looking for anything that is key to a test. I think it would be good to take notes when reading a text book so that way you can go back through your notes and find key points instead of re-reading.
-Kyle Menne
I don't really have an approach, I just read it to get it over with. I try to concentrate on what I'm reading but sometimes I read it but I don't see it, if you know what I mean. I usally just plow right though it, if I'm not intrested in the topic. The thing about textbooks is there boring and you never really want to read them. I have no idea what sq3r is, I've never heard of it till today. Taking notes from a textbook is what I do. If there's something I want to remember I make sure I write it down.
When i get assigned a reading in a textbook, usually i dont do anything with it besides just reading the portion itself. I dont do any previewing or anything, i just "plow". If its an easy class that we get the reading for, I probably wouldnt even feel the need to read it. But also if its a hard reading that i dont really understand, id probably just give up reading it. If we get an assignment that we have to find the answers for in the reading, more likely than not i would just hunt and peck for the answers. Even though i may not take advantage of using my textbook, i think its still a good tool to learn from.
Melanie Bardon
For most of my classes I use my book for book work and if there’s any reading assignments. For some classes I’ve started to read the chapter even if it isn’t assigned because I find that it helps me on the test. I look for information that is stated on the target sheet or that’s on the list of review topics and I learn those thoroughly. I don’t take notes on this information unless I know that I won’t remember it right away. Then I’ll right it somewhere other than my notebook to look at throughout the day. Reading your text book can benefit you by giving you a different perspective from the teacher or you’ll get more background information. It can give you information not covered in class that could help you in essay questions because it will show that you went above and beyond what you were assigned to learn.

I never open a text book outside of school. I find time during school to do the reading, and usually it is in that class. Why should I have to carry books back and forth from home and school. They are just way to boring for me and if it's boring it won't work for me. When I have to find answers for a worksheet from the book I skim through and find what I need. This method works for me so I don't use sq3r. It may be a good idea for other but it just doesn't work for me.
--Tia Prideaux
when i read a text book i usually just skim the whole thing first. after that i look for vocab words and write them down. so i think that text books are my frenemies because i dont like to use them but if i have to i will use them to my advantage.
kyle luedtke
If i have to read something from a textbook i usually just begin reading and don't preview at all. Usually the text book will have vocab words in bold text, so it is easier to pick those main points or important words out to help concentrate on them. If i am taking notes i read it paragraph by paragraph then go back and if there is somthing important i will write it down, but if there is just an assignment on the section i use the hunt and peck method. the sq3r might take a long time but i can see how it can really make you understand the reading. I think it is a good idea to take notes from your textbooks because it forces you to at least skim through the section and that is better than not looking at it at all. It can only help.
-Brad Hanson
When a teacher tells us to reads a chapter or a section I normally only read the bold stuff or the pictures. The pictures are alot easier to read then all the same text. The notes could help you because what if the teachers say you can use your notes on the next quiz or test and you will have some.
Sam Harvey
i open the book then i read it and look for surtain headlines. i look for surtain things like highlighted words or surtain things i need to know, i dont exactly read all of it but i read the important parts and i skim though some of the parts i dont exactly need to know then i try to remember what i just did
Karl Kaker
I usually read thorugh the entire reading assignment, taking notes on major processes, key words, and specific ideas important to the text. I look for main ideas, but also the specific words and concepts within those ideas. When searching for answers, I usually hunt and peck, but then end-up tediously going through the entire text to fill in the answers that I didn't get from "hunting and pecking". I don't take the time to sit there and think about actually doing the sq3r system. I find that by simply reading, then reviewing after, is a beneficial way to tackle any reading assignment. I think it is a great idea to take notes from your reading assignment, as long as you put the ideas from the textbook into your own words.
Hayden Potts
It depends on the class and what material we are covering. If it’s something I already know about, the teacher is lucky if I just skim over the reading. If I do decide to read the textbook assignment, I just read the section. After reading the section, I just skim the titles of the little sections to make sure I know what happened in each section. With sq3r, I think it’s a long time to accomplish a reading assignment. It does have its benefits of knowing what you’re reading but to me, it just seems like a waste of time. If I find out the teacher lets kids use notes on tests, I normally take notes all semester/year long because I want to be prepared if we do get to use notes. Most of the teachers I’ve had normally just let us students know like the day before a test whether we can use notes or not. –Stephanie Frank
What i do when im assigned to read a portion of a textbook i usually do it. I sometimes skip some paragraphs that i already knew or read before and keep going. When i read from a textbook i would look for the important facts that seem interesting or something that i never knew that seemed important. what works for me is skimming through some of the sentences to find some answers that are needed to be found, and what doesn't work for me is reading every single detail instead of just looking at something that catched my eye and read on. I preview and hunt down for answers, plowing through it doesn't really get me anywhere cause then i will forget what i read in the chapter. My benefits to useing a system like SQR3 is how the order is, like the 3 R's. read, recite, and review. That is a good way to reading a book cause i think of time going by fast and i don't realize it till im down with the section. My weaknesses is sometimes i don't feel like reading but i try pushing myself to until i get attached to the book and then i can't put it down. I think its a really good idea to take notes on what you read. Its like reading a novel that you like, you make a summary and its in your own words. then you remember how the story went and the chapters they went by.
