Before we start discussing note taking and note taking strategies, take 5 minutes or so to reflect on your own note taking habits. Consider the following:
- Do you ever take notes? Why or why not?
- How important do you think note taking will be in college?
- If you have taken notes in the past, have you ever learned about notetaking strategies?
- What, if any, note taking strategies do you use?
- Do you try to organize your notes as you take them? Why or why not?
- To what extent do you review notes before a test - how often and how much?
- What kinds of symbols or shorcuts do you use in your notes?

I don't usually take notes but it depends on the class. I think note taking is going to be very important in college because you're going to have to know the information that the teachers are telling you. I usually write down the things in the notes that I find important or sometimes the teacher will tell me what I have to write down, so that's how I take notes. I don't try to organize my notes because it doesn't really help me. I never really review my notes before a test. I don't really use symbols in my notes but sometimes I abbreviate words.
-Alex Darr
I have taken notes in the past, although I'm not sure if it has been beneficial to me because I never take the time to look over my notes. When I do take notes, I usually just take them down in the order the speaker or powerpoint has had them. I think note taking in college will be very important. I will need to find a way for the notes to work for me and make time to review them.
-Tory Schicker
I do often take notes, but I very rarely review them. When I do take notes, I find that it helps me concentrate and stay focused better. If I do review them, it is just a quick read over. I have not learned about note taking strategies, other than the silver dollar method. I have never used that method though. When taking notes, I use the outline format. The only symbols or short cuts that I use when taking notes is abbreviations for words.
-Katie Averill
I take notes if there up on the board or projector, or if i think that they could be useful eventually. I think note taking will be very important in college and maybe make your classes a bit easier for you. Helps you study up for tests or gets your homework done a lot faster. If i go through the book I just write down vocab or important information. I try to go in chronological order as it is in the book. I dont really review notes to much but when i do it helps. I dont really use any shortcuts or symbols in my notes.
I do take notes but just not in all of my classes. It's just a way how I can remember what I learned in that class that certain day. In college I do know that it will be highly important to take notes just because they probably won't give hand out notes it will be all discussion and you have to write down what's important.
My note taking strategies are writing down key ideas, making the more important ideas bolded, underlined, or in a different color/highlighted. I bullet the new ideas and make them as need as I can.
I do organize them by class and section within that class. It's easier to find what I'm looking for and what to study off of.
I do mainly use my notes for homework but using them for homework is another way for me to study for a test. Depending the difficulty of the class I do review my notes.
I use bullets, arrows, dashes and different colors to identify the different ideas.
-Gabbi Kuhnly
The only time sthat I have really taken notes in school is in bioology and math.I think that note taking will be very important in college, I think this because if you have all of your lecture notes then you will be able do study all the class material.I have heard of notetaking stratigies but i do not recall any of them.I organize my notes by lesson, and chapter.I review the notes that i have taken for the class before a test. i dont use symbols or shortcuts when i write notes. I find it all ot better to write down all of the information that is given to me.
-Taylor Gruenke
Well, I have and normally do take notes and if not right away I will write them down later (what the key points were, and such.) Notes can sometimes make or break a grade you get in a course, and I think it will be even harder in the future such as college. I don't really know a lot about strategies that you can use but I would love to know some because I have a bad habit of taking too many and then having to re-write them over. I do try to organize certain ideas and such together because it makes it a lot clearer for me when I need to study. (Not sure if that counts as 'clustering' ideas?) And when I know something is really important, I put a star next to it... Just so it catches my attention when I am studying.
I always take notes because if i dont then i feel as if i will forget everything. Sometimes when you take notes, you can use them on a test or something. I think taking notes will help you out a lot in college because then you can keep yourself organized and understand what the teacher is talking about everyday. I dont really have a certain note taking strategy but I write down anything that I feel is important. Even though I take notes I still dont look them over as much as I should meaning I only look them over a day before a test or quiz.
-Lauren Robinson
I think notes are very impotrant and yes you will have to take a lot in college. I have takes notes a lot in the past and I have learned in class that it is a great thing to do during a talk or speech. I think everyone should take notes during class atleast something that will help you on a test or a quiz. I organize them how they are on the board or on the over head. I don't review notes before a test because it doesn't help me at all. I don't use short cuts at all i write everything out like it is suppose to be. -Amanda
I don't take notes anymore. I used to be forced to take notes back in my middle school and now I hate them. It is to much writing and I never comprehend what im writing. I don't think they will be important in college either because I have been doing fine without taking notes so far and I can retain information better by listening. I never learned not taking strategies back in middle school. If I did take notes I would review them before bed and right before the test. Shorten writing and make symbols to things that only I could understand.
Yes, I frequently take notes. It helps me to remember key points and ideas. I like to refer back to my notes before a test and refresh my memory. I believe that note taking will be extremely important in college. Material will be harder and more complex, so taking notes will be helpful. I have taken plenty of notes in the past. I try to keep my notes neat and organized so it easier to understand. I have learned note taking strategies in depth during this class. Learning about each of the strategies helped me determine which ones work best for me.
-Brianna Diestler
Yes I have taken notes and I have been told I take very good notes and thorough notes. I take my notes so I can understand them and use them again. Taking notes would be very important in college due to the fact that your professors will expect you to know what they are talking about more than a high school teacher. I’ve never really been told about note taking strategies. I have learned some techniques from teachers and used them to my ability however strategies where never really stressed. I try to keep my notes organized by topic and what they have to deal with so when I go back to look at them I know what I’m looking and I can understand them. I never really look at notes before a test. Cheyenne
I take notes in class when I know that I will need to study the topic in the future, or if I know that I will need to review it to understand something better. I think that note taking in college would be really important because you are supposed to learn a lot of things and if you dont understand something, you will have notes to look back on to help answer your questions. When I take notes I write down important ideas, and I put 1 or 2 examples by an idea. I try to organize my notes when I take them so that things are easier to find and refer to. Normally I do not review notes for tests. The only time I review for tests is if I don't think I am prepared. In my notes I wright things in order and in importance.
Josh Derus
I do not take notes because i don't think they are always necessary in order to get a good grade. In college i think note takeing will be very important because there will be alot more stuff you will need to remember. I remember hearing some note taking strategies but i dont remember any of them so i don't really use them. If i ever do take notes i just write a couple little things down then usuall forget about them. Usually i don't review before e test unless it's a copied sheet given to us.
i take notes all the time because otherwise i wont do well all on tests. it will be very important to take notes in college because you still need to study hard and you need them to study. i don't really organize i just write notes. i study right before a test so i remember the information
Kim
i dont take notes ever. i just dont like writing alot. so i usualy dont take notes but i do remember things well. i have no note taking strategies at all. i look over a previous quiz and that usualy helps me remember what im suposed to be doing and i just remember how to do what im suposed to.
-joshua cortinaz
I do take notes once in awhile when I feel like I have to or when I feel like the stuff I'm learning is new to me and I want what I'm learning to stick a little bit better in my brain. I think that taking notes in college will be very important for studying and being able to understand the material fully. I don't really use any stategies while taking notes, just write down what I think is important, the organization of it doesn't really matter to me. I never really review my notes before a test, mainly because I don't feel like I have to, or I just don't feel like it. I don't really use and symbols or shortcuts in my notes, only abbreviate some words.
-Ali Gilhuber
I take notes depending on the class and what's being discussed. I think notes will be important during college, only if they are taken well. I only write down key concepts or ideas. Usually, if a teacher says something twice, it's best to write it down because teachers don't repeat themselves often. The only organizational method I use is recording the information as it's being discussed. Again, it depend on the class whether I will review the notes or not. If I do review, it's usually the morning of the test or the class before. I don't use symbols because I never can remember what they mean.
--Stephanie Frank
I usually do take notes because I feel they help me better understand the material that the teacher is teaching. I think that note taking will be very important in college bacause you will have to know all of the things the teachers are telling you. I haven't ever been taught how to properly take notes. I kind of organize my notes. I put larger sized dots next to the main topics. I then put smaller dots by the subtopics. I usually review notes for about a half hour the night before a test. I don't realy use symbols or shortcuts when I take notes.
Trevor Thiel
I hardly ever take notes. I usually only take them when i have paper, but I rarely ever have paper. I think that it would benifit me if i took notes. I would probably get better grades if I took notes. It would be a good thing if I started to take notes because in college I am going to have to take a lot of notes.
Kyle Luedtke
I sometimes take notes, but it depends on the class. I only take notes when the teachers are going over things that will be on a upcoming test, or if they are writing out notes for us on the board. Otherwise I asume if everyone else isn't taking notes, then I don't need to. I organize my notes by classes, because i have different folders and notebooks for every class. And before a test, I prep by just reading over my notes until I feel comfortable enough that i know what everything means. My notes usually aren't as high quality as as an outline, I usually just make bullet points.
Melanie Bardon
I do take notes. I forget things very easily so I figure if I don't think I can remember what I've learned or how to do something I better write it down. I think note taking will be very important in college. Expecially in college. Note taking is best when you reword it into your own little way. I try to shorten the notes I get to a way thats better. I do use symbol but only if the teacher is taking fast or I don't have much time to write it down. Sometimes I use texting lingo, but I go back sometimes and rewrite it so it makes more sense and I don't have to sit there and think about oh what does that mean again.
-Madaline Slocum
I really don't take any notes. I usually just remember certion things i hear in class. This isnt a good methiod because you can easily forget some stuff. If I would go on into college i think that I'd be takeing notes. But the times that I did take notes but i rarely looked at them. Most of the times i will use sybmols in the little notes that i take
I usually take notes in most of my classes. I think note- taking in college will be very important because i dont think they will give you handout worksheets or study guides or anything. Write down the key points with main ideas and maybe a couple examples. Highlight vocabulary words. I organize my notes by section, so it's easier to find. I usually dont review thwm much, except maybe the night before or the day of the test. I abbreviate long words or sometimes use number symbols for numbers.
-Brittany Daigle
I usually take notes because it helps me get an overview of what i am about to learn and than i can go back and really understand them. I think notetaking will be very important in college especially if it is a bigger college because you can't always get the one on one discussions with you teacher like you do in high school. When taking notes i usually define vocab words or important concepts and than add a few important details. yes i organize the notes while i take them because when you go back to use your notes you will know where to find them and it will make more sense to you. I use my notes on homework (if needed), otherwise i just read over them and review them the night before a test.
- Brad Hanson
I usually take notes because it is important to understand the material in class and note taking helps me remember what was discussed. I think note taking in college is definitely important because it helps to learn the material and to study. I usually use different colored pens or highlighters when I'm taking notes so that I can find what I am looking for much faster. I try to organize my notes as I take them, but sometimes it is too difficult as I am writing them down, so I sometimes reorganize them later. Having organized notes helps me study much faster. I usually review the notes as soon as the teacher sets a date of the test. If I know ahead of time, I have more time to review. During my note taking, I sometimes use abbreviations to shorten my notes.
I take notes in nearly all of my classes. They help me study and learn the material faster and more efficiently than simply trying to remember everything after the first time I learn it. I think taking notes in college will be necessary and crucial, for it will help you depict the main points and key details necessary for exams and other classwork. One major strategy I use is by making sub-topics off of my main points. This technique has worked well for me in the past and hopefully serve useful in college. My teachers usually give the notes in order so the organization is usually not a problem. Finally, the most important aspect of notes is the ability to use them whil studying for tests and quizzes. Depending on the scenario and the size of the test I am taking, I study my notes accordingly.
-Hayden Potts-
I usually take notes in all my classes so that I have the information and writing it helps me remember more. I think that note taking will be a big thing in college because the information is going to be more important to you and your teachers aren't going to keep repeating the stuff they go over they are going to want to move on. I usually write down everything the teacher says because I was never really taught how to break my notes down to just the important stuff. I also write down what the teacher says is important and that were going to want to know that detail. I try to organize my notes in an outline way so that its easier for me to find the information even though it doesn't really help me. I look over my notes sometimes before tests just because it aggravates me because even if I study the material I have written down it still doesn't help me on tests. I don't really use symbols in my notes because I know I'll forget what I meant by it. Nobody has really taught me how to take notes so it doesn't come easy to me.
-Brittany Kassens
I usually do take notes in classes but sometimes i dont feel they are necaserry. Note taking will be very important in college because everything is on a higher level and you need to know the stuff because the teachers wont care if you fail the test or not. When i take notes i try to organize them but some teachers go off on tangents and it is hard to follow along with them and keep notes. I currently dont use any symbols at all other than bullets.
- Kyle Menne
I do take notes occasionally if the teacher tells me that we should or if it looks like somthing we would take a test on. I think note taking will be quite important in college because college is a lot more important than high school you can't just half try like in high school, you have to put forth your BEST effort.I have learned of some note taking strategies, yet im still not very good at it. I don't really have a strategy, I just write down the things that seem to be the most important. I do somewhat organize them by putting like the title or main subject as 1 and then putting all its smaller less important but relating subjects as like a or b. I rarely ever actually sit down and study my notes for a test, if i were to look over them it would probably only be for a few minutes before a test. symbols i usually use are lie 1,2,3 or a,b,c
I usually take notes when I don't understand the subject that well but if the notes are in English class I rarely take notes. But if the class is a Science subject then I will take notes everyday. Even if they are not that important I still will write them down. For me writing them down helps me think and understand what the class is talking about. Yes taking notes is a good skill to have when somebody wants to advance there education course. The college teachers don't really care if somebody understands what they are talking about. The college teacher gets his or her pay check every month so that makes them happy. I try to organize them into the times of what we heard them in. I hate abbriviate words. It makes no sense to me.
Sam Harvey
yes i take notes. i take notes because alot of teachers let you use them on tests or quizes.so if u can use them on the test and quizes, take the notes. and plus its an easy way to study from if u take notes.i think note taking in college would be important. i usually always take notes and its easy to study from so i can past the test and quizes. i organize my notes so i dont have to look around for somthing. i just look over my notes bfore i have a quiz or test. if somthing is important ill put a star by it to show that its important.
-Alex Wachowiak
I take notes in classes whenever there's a note taking time. I use my notes often on assignments, labs, but mainly at the end of the chapter on review assignments. I mark vocabulary words that I'll need to know and use bullets to organize my notes. I don’t organize my notes in any special way, I just take them as the teacher writes them on the bored or in the order they’re being discussed. I also use abbreviations for words and ideas to save room and time while taking notes. I think that it'll be important to take notes in college to remember key concepts discussed by the teacher that may not be covered in the readings. I’ll also use my notes to study for exams more often than I do now. Kate Hojnacki

Taking notes in college is something that you really have to do, you have to pay close attention and write down pretty much everything you hear so you can use it later. When i take notes i just make sure i bold and underline things that are important like the main points and then the little sub-points i number. I do look over notes before taking a test because it helps me a lot. I keep all of my notes organized.

I do take notes in certain classes, especially in math or science ones. I feel it is important to take notes in those types of classes so you have something to look back on when you are doing your assignments or studying for a test. My notes are organized. I have certain spots in my notebooks for vocab words, formulas, and other notes. I don't review my notes very much before tests because I usually have a good understanding on what is going on because of practice worksheets. Shortcuts i use would sort of be like texting ones. If i can abreviate it ill write it that way.
--Tia Prideaux
Yes i take notes because
If i don't take notes then i can't study from them or use them on quizes, if allowed. I think note taking in college will be very important because 1) you can't rely on teachers to be there and to give you the notes, 2) you have to be a responsible adult and know that notes will help you in college. I have learned some note taking strategies, like Organizing my notes and placeing them in a category that fits for that type of topic. I try to organize my notes all the time, sometime i get bothered if my notes look messy so i erase the notes and rewrite them just to please myself. It helps me study better if they are nice and neat. I usually sit in my room alone for hours just to study my notes. I study for a half an hour at least everyday. For symbols i use the (*) if something is Important for a test or something and i use (-) for definitions or regular information not that important.

In some classes I take notes, but I rarely look at them after I took them. In college I think that it will be important to take them because there is going to be a lot of lectures, and it would probably be a good think to look back at them. In the past I would always write down everything the teacher said, but now I write down only the important things. When I take notes it bothers me when they are all over the place. I am not a very organized person, but when it comes to taking notes, I have to have everything in order. I don't use symbols that much, but if I think something is important I star it, "bold" it, or circle it.
Kari
I only take notes in math classes or science classes. I've never found a need to use them in any other class (except for histroy that one time). I was never taught any stratagies or anything like the silver dollar method.I'll try to look over some key points or formulas before a test, but usually my notes sit in my notebook, never to be looked at again. I know how important notes will be in college, and I know that I'll be able to take them when the time comes, but to be honest, I don't feel like I despratly need to take notes at this point. When I do take notes in college though, I'll probably use the silver dollar method (that is assuming I can read my own handwriting)
